A cabinet intended for glass and silver has to be honest about what it holds, and the Ashcombe Ivory and Gilt Display Cabinet by EKAR FURNITURE is built on exactly that principle. It is a classical English neoclassical display cabinet raised on legs, arranged in two clearly separated stages, a glazed upper section for showing things and a closed lower section for keeping them. The body is painted in a soft ivory, its edges and panels picked out with fine dark ebonised lineing, its corners held by carved and gilded pilasters, and its lower doors filled with burr walnut panels decorated in gilt floral inlay. Cast gilt handles sit where the two doors meet, sized to be grasped comfortably with a decanter in the other hand. Inside, the shelving is glass, supported on fitted brackets so the shelves can be repositioned to the height of whatever is actually being displayed, tall decanters on one level, stemware on another, a small silver bucket or porcelain below. Its pair of solid doors are faced in rich burr walnut, the figure of the wood matched between the two panels so the grain answers across the centre line, and each panel carries a hand-worked gilt inlay composition of flowers, foliage, and stylised stems rising from a base, a vertical ornament that sits firmly in the middle of the door. Around these panels the ivory frame and dark lineing hold the pattern in place, so the marquetry reads as a deliberate picture rather than a surface filler. Behind the doors the storage is enclosed and dark, which is where bottles kept out of sunlight, spare decanters, linen, polishing cloth, and the untidy business of entertaining belong. The interiors are lined and finished to the same standard as the exterior, with fitted shelving arranged to what you intend to keep in there. Between the two stages runs a broken cornice, an ebonised moulding that steps forward and out, and this horizontal break is what allows a tall cabinet of this proportion to read as two composed elements rather than one block.
The architecture of the piece is what lifts it from storage to furniture. Full-height fluted pilasters, carved and gilded with shaped capitals at the top, close each corner and give the cabinet a clear vertical rhythm against the horizontal bands of the cornice and base. The whole body is raised on fluted tapering legs, dressed with gilt mounts at the head and finished in gilt feet, so the mass of the cabinet is lifted cleanly off the floor and the rug passes underneath. This legged stance keeps a deep case looking slim from the side, and lets the piece be placed against a wall or angled into a corner without sitting like a bulkhead. As export furniture, the pilasters, cornice, legs, and doors are fitted, finished, and packed in-house to travel without damage, and the glazing is protected and braced for shipping.
